What amazes me is that anyone puts FLW above the brothers Greene for residential architecture. Yes, I see some of the genius in his work, but so often his residential designs look like near misses --- almosts, if you will --- although the way the Smith house sits in place is a beauty. Thanks for the article.
Greene Brothers were superb craftsmen & heavily involved in the construction of their houses (almost all houses). Their designs were elaborations on well established styles, however. Wright was more innovative as a designer. "Prairie Style" wasn't a thing prior to FLW.
Of course. And some of his designs were stellar but, imo, less pleasing aesthetically. It's super hard to be original and excellent, and I prefer the approach that the Greenes took. They borrowed a lot from Asia (as did FLW) and blended classical forms into exquisite architecture. One could argue that their work wasn't as original (as FLW), but who argues that their aesthetic achievement in residential architecture isn't unsurpassed?
Visited Fallingwater two years ago. Profoundly immersive experience in the harmoniously flowing space and sound and light.
Amazing.

Never did like his esthetic. Give me Beaux Arts any day, or even a well proportioned Colonial.
fascinating!
Once I became an adult, I stopped liking FLW's work. It might be "cutting edge," but it's ugly.
Oookay, so you're not totally against anything that doesn't contain a flower ornament. So maybe next time you may see beauty in Mies' work too!
It must be amazing to be immersed in the sound of flowing water surrounding you at home everyday.
