Ludwig built several castles, each very unique, each with its very own blend of nature, art and history. Neuschwanstein might be the most famous one - but the others are also worth a visist (or a picture gallery on your social media channels):
"Herrenchiemsee":
a palace modeled on Versailles on a lonely island in the midst of a very large lake near the Alps. It features a Hall of Mirrors, even larger than the one in Versailles.
"Linderhof":
(near Neuschwanstein and easily visited on the same day trip): a very small palace. But situated in the most stunning sourrounding: you drive for a while in an isolated valley between high mountains - and suddenly you reach a very large and beautiful garden and in the midst of that garden is a palace.
"Schachenhaus":
situated on a remoute mountain top. From the outside it looks almost like a log cabin - but the inside is spectacular including a throne room in turkish style. You can only access it by hiking up the mountain on foot - but the reward for that hiking trip is just gorgeous.
Nice article. I lived not far from this castle and only visited it once, but passed through the area numbers of times. Your articles always teach me something! Thank you.

Agreed. He left an incredible legacy.
The castle at Disneyland is very obviously a stylistic descendant of Neuschwanstein- and knowing Disney, that was an intentional act of homage.

Incredible place - very lucky.
Neuschwanstein Castle is so beautiful. I would love to visit one day! Thank you for this article about the story. I never heard it before.

Images mixed up - now corrected! Thanks
I was fortunate to visit Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau thirty years ago. Unforgettable.
Very cool! I would love to visit this castle myself one day.
The castle was in part funded by a bribe Bismarck paid to get Bavaria to support the unification of the German Empire.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
